Connect your AI assistant

Start with the visual steps for ChatGPT or Claude. If you work in a terminal or code editor, use the Claude Code or Cursor instructions below. Every option uses the same hosted URL.

1 ChatGPT

ChatGPT: Add WriteAlt as a custom MCP app

Connect WriteAlt from ChatGPT, then finish the WriteAlt sign-in flow when the connection opens.

  1. Open ChatGPT Settings and find Developer mode under Security and sign-in if your workspace shows that option.
  2. Open chatgpt.com/plugins and select the add button to create a new connection.
  3. Name the connection WriteAlt and paste the server URL shown above.
  4. Approve the connection and return to ChatGPT. Supported paid and education web plans may be required, and managed workspaces may need an administrator to enable Developer mode.

2 Claude

Claude: Connect the hosted connector

Claude uses a connector flow. Add WriteAlt once, authorize it, and then return to the conversation you want to use.

  1. Open Claude on the web or in the desktop app.
  2. Open Settings or Customize, then go to Connectors.
  3. Choose Add custom connector, name it WriteAlt, and paste the server URL shown above.
  4. Select Connect and complete the WriteAlt sign-in. Team and Enterprise workspaces may require an owner to allow the connector.

3 Claude

Claude Code: Add the remote server

Register the hosted endpoint from your terminal, then finish the connection from inside Claude Code.

  1. Run the two commands below to add WriteAlt and confirm that Claude Code can see it.
  2. Open Claude Code and run /mcp when you are ready to authorize the connection.
  3. Complete the WriteAlt sign-in, then enter your API key on the secure WriteAlt page that opens.
claude mcp add --transport http writealt https://mcp.writealt.com/mcp
claude mcp list
4 Cursor

Cursor: Open your global MCP config

Create Cursor's global MCP folder and open the configuration file from PowerShell.

  1. Open PowerShell on your computer.
  2. Run the commands below. The second command opens the file where Cursor stores global MCP connections.
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force ":USERPROFILE\.cursor" | Out-Null
notepad ":USERPROFILE\.cursor\mcp.json"
5 Cursor

Cursor: Add WriteAlt to mcp.json

Paste the JSON below into mcp.json, save the file, and restart Cursor.

  1. Keep the server name as writealt so it is easy to recognize in Cursor.
  2. When Cursor asks you to connect, approve it and complete the WriteAlt sign-in.
  3. Enter your API key on the secure WriteAlt page that opens after the connection is approved.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "writealt": {
      "url": "https://mcp.writealt.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Finish your secure WriteAlt setup

The connection is not complete until WriteAlt has your API key.

  1. Wait for the WriteAlt setup page to open after you approve the assistant connection.
  2. Enter your WriteAlt API key on that secure page.
  3. Keep the key inside WriteAlt. Do not paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, or mcp.json.

Other compatible MCP clients

The same connection works in other clients that support remote Streamable HTTP MCP and OAuth.

  1. Add the hosted WriteAlt URL as a remote MCP server.
  2. Approve the connection and complete the WriteAlt sign-in.
  3. Enter your API key on the secure WriteAlt page, then refresh the client tools if needed.
Use the same WriteAlt URL in every client. After the connection is approved, enter your API key only on the secure WriteAlt page that opens for you.

After you connect: Start asking

You can speak naturally. Your assistant can use the connected WriteAlt workflow when you ask for account details, language changes, or image descriptions.

Check your credits

Ask for your current WriteAlt balance before starting a larger batch.

How many credits do I have?

Change the language

Ask for a different language when you need localized image content.

Change this alt text to Spanish.

Use an image from anywhere

Ask WriteAlt to describe an upload, a local image, or a public image URL, depending on what your assistant supports.

Generate alt text for this upload, local file, or https://example.com/photo.jpg

A simpler way to bring image context into AI workflows

The WriteAlt MCP server keeps the connection hosted and straightforward, so your assistant can work with your image accessibility workflow without another local service to maintain.

Questions about WriteAlt MCP Server

Here are the details most teams check before getting started.

After the assistant connection is approved, WriteAlt opens a secure page for you to enter the API key. Keep the key on that page and do not paste it into your assistant or mcp.json.

Which clients can connect to WriteAlt?

This guide covers ChatGPT, Claude web or Desktop, Claude Code, and Cursor. Other clients can connect when they support remote Streamable HTTP MCP and OAuth.

What happens after I connect my assistant?
